Once again, a victim of Christmas-time theft.
WHY.
Last year, it was my iPhone on Christmas day. This year, apparently 3 men broke into my apartment on the 16th floor to steal my two laptops (one’s broken) and the only 10 USD I had in my spare wallet.
Here’s the details from an email I wrote:
It’s just so strange that 3 men broke into our apt to steal just my laptops. I can’t figure out what kind of people would have done this. It’s not like we live on the first floor with easy access. How would someone target this apartment? The only things we can think of are that 1) Taobao delivery people have constantly been coming to our apt so they must know when we aren’t home, 2) the china Telecom people come IN to the apartment to fix our internet and by now they must know were American 3) we just took Alex’s laptop to a computer shop yesterday..?!
It’s even more strange that they definitely just looked at my passport and through my drawers, but didn’t bother to take those or the laptop chargers, my camera, or any other electronics.
We spoke to our neighbor last night, who is also foreigner, and she told us that at 3pm when she was entering her apt room, she remembered seeing 3 men leave from inside our apartment wearing work clothes and carrying a toolbox. She didn’t think anything of it because she thought they were some repair men. I didn’t get home until 5:30pm and I didn’t realize someone had broken in until after a few minutes. Everything looked fairly normal when I walked in except the apartment had a faint, unfamiliar odor. My laptop was missing, my wallet was left open, and then I noticed my broken laptop was also missing. Then I realized that it was also weird that it my key wouldn’t fit into the keyhole properly when I was trying to get in and I had to jam it in a couple of times to get it to work. I looked through my papers and noticed they had all been touched. The cards in my wallet had been pulled out and shoved back in sloppily.
The police came and “investigated” and we went down to the station to file a report but I have a very strong suspicion, they don’t care at all. We just changed our locks but I’m still very paranoid.
I definitely locked the door when I left in the morning. These men definitely picked our lock. What’s even more unsettling is that on Saturday morning, a strange man knocked on our door sometime at the crack of dawn to ask if he was on the 17th floor. Only a blind man couldn’t figure out we were the 16th floor. Theres a sign RIGHT when you get out of the elevator. Alex opened the door after the incessant knocking and the guy asked that idiodic question, then bounced.
What. The. F***.
